Emergency

24/7 Emergency and Critical Care

The Emergency and Critical Care Service at UQ VETS Equine Specialist Hospital provides comprehensive veterinary care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

All emergency cases must be referred by a veterinarian who has attended to the horse for its current problem and we must speak to your veterinarian before we can accept the horse into hospital.

We provide state-of-the-art medical, surgical, anaesthetic, and obstetrical expertise for the evaluation and management of horses with life-threatening conditions. Our intensive care unit provides 24/7 care to critically-ill patients and there is a vet and nursing staff on duty at all times. We are fully equipped for surgical procedures such as colic’s or caesareans at all times and our sling-stall is designed for musculoskeletal and neurologic cases, ‘down horses,’ that require temporary sling assistance.
Common emergencies that UQ VETS  attend to include but are not limited to:

  • Colic
  • Lacerations and wounds
  • Neonatal foal emergencies
  • Ocular emergencies
  • Acute lameness
  • Respiratory Distress
  • Severe neurologic abnormalities (down horse)
