UQ Researcher Profile

BS VMD DACVS

Equine Surgeon and Specialist in Lameness

Steven joined UQ VETS Equine Specialist Hospital after international positions at Veterinary Hospitals in the USA (University of Pennsylvania) and South Africa (University of Pretoria). Steven completed his residency at the University of Pennsylvania and became board certified in large animal surgery in 2008.  Steven joined UQ VETS Equine specialist hospital after practicing internationally at University of Pennsylvania in the USA and University of Pretoria in South Africa.  Steven specialises in orthopaedic surgery, reconstructive surgery,  lameness, and scintigraphic imaging.

After practicing internationally, Steven considers being part of this team a privilege. The UQ VETS facility offers start-of-the-art facilities, the ability to work with the collaborative and talented multi-disciplinary term of veterinary specialists and South-East Queensland is a region with a diverse population of horses. Early in his career, Steven considered the number of surgeries undertaken as the benchmark of quality. Having been at UQ VETS since 2010, as a surgeon, Steven now views the capacity to undertake a variety of types of surgery as the standard to be able to deliver the best standard of treatment and post-operative care. Steven’s longest surgery (to date) was 12 hours on an extremely complex case and to save a valuable animal. “very few places can keep a horse alive for that length of time and as surgeons, we need the talented and experienced anaesthesiologists to do that…. It is a privilege to be part of that team”.

Steven considers his role and responsibility in teaching veterinary students of significant importance and is a perfectionist about standards expected and promoted, and is proactive in improving teaching methods to ensure students are comfortable in surgical situations. He is also active at the professional level, consulting, exchanging knowledge and skills in cross disciplinary approaches to continually improve surgical techniques with industry colleagues. In his spare time, Steven loves fishing, carpentry, kayaking and family time.
